Nightclub Two-Step
History
Born in the Nightclubs of the 1970s
Nightclub Two-Step (sometimes written Nightclub 2-Step or NC2S) was created in the mid-1970s by California dance teacher Buddy Schwimmer, known as the "King of Swing."
Dancers needed a style that worked with slow pop ballads, which were extremely popular at the time. Traditional slow dancing (standing and swaying) felt limiting, and ballroom dances were too formal or too fast for these songs.
Schwimmer's solution was a relaxed, flowing partner dance built on:
- Side-to-side motion
- A gentle, natural sway
- Continuous rhythm
- Simple, elegant patterns
The result was a versatile slow-dance style perfect for nightclubs, social events, and-decades later-weddings.
A Natural Fit for Modern Music
As contemporary pop ballads continued growing in popularity, Nightclub Two-Step spread nationwide. It became a favorite among social dancers for its ability to adapt to:
- Acoustic covers
- Soft rock
- Country ballads
- Love songs
- Modern pop
- Singer-songwriter tracks
Today it remains one of the most practical and useful partner dances for slow music.
